For athletes undertaking dynamic sports such as rugby, hockey, football and cricket, one of the most common problems to occur is pelvic and groin injury. Often causing long term pain, groin and pelvic issues are also tricky to diagnose.
The location of injury can be hard to pinpoint, and finding a solution to cure the problem can be complex. Adductors are the principle area of focus, and consist of six different muscles that can become stretched beyond their limit.
Whilst it can be hard to do consistently, warming and down are vital steps to prevent such injuries – but there are other technologies that can also boost your chances of preventing, and recovering – from pelvic and groin strains.
Pelvic belts have been one solution, however these aren’t always practical to wear on a consistent basis, and can’t be used during sport. They also don’t look so great! For athletes though, this presents a real limitation to their recovery.
In 2016, a study by Leanne Sawle, Jennifer Freeman, and Jonathan Marsden of Plymouth University was carried out with the primary goal of finding out if the use of Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthosis would serve as an effective alternative.
What’s That You’re Wondering?
In simpler terms, a Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthosis is a pair of compression shorts specifically designed to support the area around the pelvis and groin. Through a study that involved 8 athletes over 15 days,the team assessed the impact. Each athlete had varying degrees of injury, and came from differing sporting backgrounds that included rugby, yoga, running, boxing, cycling and skiing.
So what Did They Do?
Each athlete was tested using a number of methods, which included:
- Resisted Adduction – to measure both pain measure and strength
- Single Leg Raise Test – to measure pain
- Pain at rest whilst wearing the shorts
- Jump test – measuring pain pre and post jumping
What Did They Find?
Through the series of tests, the researchers found that athletes could, on average, apply more pressure to the resisted adductor test, and pain was reduced when using single leg raises. Equally, it showed evidence that pain was reduced whilst resting and both pre and post jump too.
